Turbulent flows are usually termed “turbidity currents”. The latter term is, however, commonly misused. It designates a flow that is neither turbulent nor (sometimes) a current.

Turbulent flows are characterized by a mixing action throughout the flow field caused by eddies in the flow. The fluid flow in which the adjacent layers of the fluid cross each other and do not move parallel to each other. In turbulent flow the fluid layers do not moves in straight line. They move randomly in zigzag manner.

The turbulent flow occurs when the velocity of the fluid is high and it flows through larger diameter pipes. The fluid flow having Reynolds number greater than 4000 is called turbulent flow. The fluid does not flow in a definite order. There is a mixing of different layers and they do not move parallel to each other but cross each other. The Turbulent flows differ from the corresponding laminar flows in that the turbulent flows have a complex internal structure, a different distribution of the averaged velocity over a cross section of the flow, and different overall characteristics, that is, a different dependence on the Reynolds number Re of the flow rate, the resistance coefficient, and the average mean velocity over a cross section or the maximum velocity. laminar flow 2.Turbulent flow: It is illustrated in Fig..

A turbulent flow violates several of these requirements. Firstly, as mentioned above, turbulent flows are always viscous.

turbulent flow. The motion of a fluid in which local velocities and pressures fluctuate highly irregularly with time, in contrast to streamline flow. McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Architecture and Construction. Copyright © 2003 by McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.

McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Architecture and Construction. Copyright © 2003 by McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. This type of motion is called turbulent flow. A fluid moving in turbulent flow exerts greater thrust on an obstacle in its path. It depends on how suddenly the direction of motion of fluid, is changed by the obstacles.

However, the instrument itself used as flow controller, with a valve behind the meter, can cause a turbulent flow again. The pressure drop in pipes (hence, the power requirements for pumping) can be considerably lower if the flow is laminar rather than turbulent. Fortunately, the blood flow through a person’s arteries is normally laminar, exceptinthelargestarterieswithhighbloodflowrates. In turbulent flow the flow rate is proportional to the square root of the pressure gradient, as opposed to its direct proportionality to pressure gradient in laminar flow. Using the definition of the Reynolds number we can see that a large diameter with rapid flow, where the density of the blood is high, tends towards turbulence. Fluid mechanics, turbulent flow and turbulence modeling Lars Davidson Divisionof Fluid Dynamics Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences Chalmers University of Technology When the inertial forces dominate over the viscous forces (when the fluid is flowing faster and Re is larger) then the flow is turbulent. It is a dimensionless number comprised of the physical characteristics of the flow.

Turbulent flow

The turbulent flow is caused by disturbances in the well-ordered flow, which are always present. However, these disturbances can be compensated to a certain degree by a relatively strong internal cohesion of the fluid, so that the flow remains laminar. It is defined as: When a fluid flows over a flat plate, a turbulent flow is to be expected if the Reynolds numbers are greater than 100,000. In stirred vessels, the critical Reynolds numbers are around 10,000. In this case, turbulent flows need not be a disadvantage, but contribute essentially to rapid mixing! Definition of turbulent flow. : a fluid flow in which the velocity at a given point varies erratically in magnitude and direction — compare laminar flow. Turbulent flow can be defined as a type of flow in which the drilling fluid undergoes irregular fluctuations instead of a smooth laminar flow. The velocity of the fluid is undergoing continuous changes in both magnitude and direction.
